Petit rendezvous with…

Jean Gabin, Marlene Dietrich - trop romantique!

Romance: Jean Gabin, Marlene Dietrich

We’ve had so many suggestions from fans of French music about who to feature next, we decided to give a sneak preview of the incredible artists we plan to cover in future posts.

What they all have in common is amazing stories of triumphs over adversity – and of course that they sing in French!

We’re calling these mini posts ‘Petit Rendezvous with…‘ – and of course we will over time also add their music and lyrics (translated into English) to our addictive language learning ezine at LingoLyrics.com.

So let’s get started! Here’s our very first ‘Petit Rendezvous with…‘:

  • Alain Bashung: French singer, songwriter and actor – RIP (1 December 1947 – 14 March 2009). Alain was the most awarded artist in the history of the coveted ‘Les Victoires’. Raised by his grandmother in a tiny village in Alsace, Alain beat all the odds to become an international star despite being a very shy man to the end. A sad loss for French and World music.
  • Jean Gabin: French singer, songwriter, movie star and war hero – RIP (17 May 1904 – 15 November 1976). His love affair with Marlene Dietrich saw him spurn a major Hollywood movie role after the studio refused to give his lover a part in the film. Instead he joined the Free French Forces of General Charles de Gaulle and won medals for valour in WWII campaigns in North Africa.  When Paris was liberated Marlene was waiting to greet him on his battle tank – trop romantique!
  • Jacques Brel: Belgian singer, songwriter, actor and director – RIP (8 April 1929 – 9 October 1978). So much of his music is familiar to the English-speaker’s ear because many of his songs were recorded in English by stars like Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, Dusty Springfield, Ray Charles, Spencer Moody, Terry Jacks… the list goes on! Jacques sold more than 25 million records worldwide.

Just so you know… Jesse McCartney sings in French!

March 9, 2009

Jesse McCartney, who turns just 22 on April 9, proves he’s an all-round talent by singing his heart out in FRENCH.

The gorgeous award-winning American actor and top-selling recording artist does an amazing job of singing in French with ‘De Toi À Moi‘ (‘From Me to You’). It’s the French version of his hit song ‘Just So You Know‘ – and it ROCKS! (And so does his English/French mixed version of the same song – hear that version on the Lingolyrics Youtube Channel).

Here’s a few quick facts about Jesse:

  • He began his career at the age of 11, when his family moved with him to Los Angeles
  • He landed the role of Adam Chandler Jr. in the ABC soap All My Children, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination
  • From 1999 to 2002 he was a member of American pop boy band Dream Street
  • Aged 15, he went solo, producing his debut album Beautiful Soul in September 2004. It went platinum and won him numerous awards.
  • His first headlining tour began in 2005 and featured 56 stops in the USA before moving on to Australia and Europe
  • His movie debut came in 2008 when he starred in the title role in the teen drama, Keith
  • Jesse is also a widely respected song-writer, having co-written singer Leona Lewis’s worldwide hit single Bleeding Love as well as Don’t Leave for Vanessa Hudgens.
