We’ve had so many suggestions from fans of French music about who to feature next, we decided to give a sneak preview of the incredible artists we plan to cover in future posts.
What they all have in common is amazing stories of triumphs over adversity – and of course that they sing in French!
We’re calling these mini posts ‘Petit Rendezvous with…‘ – and of course we will over time also add their music and lyrics (translated into English) to our addictive language learning ezine at LingoLyrics.com.
So let’s get started! Here’s our very first ‘Petit Rendezvous with…‘:
- Alain Bashung: French singer, songwriter and actor – RIP (1 December 1947 – 14 March 2009). Alain was the most awarded artist in the history of the coveted ‘Les Victoires’. Raised by his grandmother in a tiny village in Alsace, Alain beat all the odds to become an international star despite being a very shy man to the end. A sad loss for French and World music.
- Jean Gabin: French singer, songwriter, movie star and war hero – RIP (17 May 1904 – 15 November 1976). His love affair with Marlene Dietrich saw him spurn a major Hollywood movie role after the studio refused to give his lover a part in the film. Instead he joined the Free French Forces of General Charles de Gaulle and won medals for valour in WWII campaigns in North Africa. When Paris was liberated Marlene was waiting to greet him on his battle tank – trop romantique!
- Jacques Brel: Belgian singer, songwriter, actor and director – RIP (8 April 1929 – 9 October 1978). So much of his music is familiar to the English-speaker’s ear because many of his songs were recorded in English by stars like Frank Sinatra, David Bowie, Dusty Springfield, Ray Charles, Spencer Moody, Terry Jacks… the list goes on! Jacques sold more than 25 million records worldwide.
