Rendezvous with… Christina Goh!

April 3, 2009
Christina Goh: A star is born!

Christina Goh: A star is born!

Christina Goh is a gifted, French-born singer, songwriter and poet of Caribbean and African descent.

Her music mirrors her heritage – rich in French, African, West Indian and even oriental influences.

Christina’s self-penned lyrics are both vivid and profound – so it comes as no surprise to learn that she is also the author of an elegantly thought-provoking book of poetry, Le Chant des Coeurs.

And her voice is unique – soothing and energising in equal measures.

Beautiful Christina (30) was born in the 12th arrondissement in Paris to a Caribbean mother and African father. Even this cultural mix was not enough to satisfy her curiosity – Christina also found an interest in Indian and oriental cultures and music, to go with the French influences all around her.

“I feel very much part of this new generation for whom the world is a house, and other people are brothers and sisters, regardless of where they are or what they look like,” she says.

A trained journalist with a background in psychology studies, at the age of 23 Christina decided to drop everything else and focus on her true dream – a career in music.

“I made the decision that I was no longer going to listen to those who told me my dream was impossible. I needed to prove that it could be a reality – your dreams only come true if you believe in them enough to work hard to achieve them.”

And that’s exactly what Christina has been doing – working painstakingly to develop her craft, her performance skills, her profile.

She has spent the last seven years honing her vocals and song-writing talent, singing with both gospel and pop groups. She released the single Métisse chocolate in November 2007, and has since written and recorded a number of other songs.

Her new album is called Eveil (Awakening) and the video for its first cut, Réputation de peine, can be viewed on LingoLyrics courtesy of Christina, with the lyrics translated into (literal) English.

Christina spends her time between Paris and her beautiful mother island of Martinique in the Caribbean.

Tryo – they’re truly green!

March 28, 2009

TRYO: On a roll...

TRYO: Eco friendly and on a roll...

Tryo is a French reggae band famous for singing about cannabis.

But that’s not the only ‘green’ they support…

They are also known for being super conscious of the environment, urging fans to cycle to their concerts.

The band members themselves use Vélib, the free bike scheme first made popular in Paris and now spreading around the world.

Eco-friendly Tryo’s latest album is even biodegradable (apart from the CD itself, of course!).

With phenomenal support in their home country and becoming more popular by the day in the rest of Europe and in Quebec, Tryo is also well known for their over-the-top live performances.

The ‘unplugged’ acoustic group consists of three French guitarists, a Latin American percussionist and a producer:

  • Guizmo (Cyril Célestin): Singer, composer – guitar
  • Mali (Christophe Petit): Singer, composer – guitar, accordion, piano, melodica
  • Manu (Manu Eveno): Singer – guitar, bass, oud, flute, clarinet, tables
  • Danielito (Daniel Bravo): Drums, djembe, darbouka, congas, guiro, cajón, bendir, bongos, violin
  • Bibou (Sébastien Pujol): Manager, sound engineer

Tryo uses dramatic and funny lyrics to criticise corrupt French politicians as well as world leaders (ex US President George W. Bush is one famous example).

The band’s ‘tolerant’ view on cannabis is especially clear on earlier numbers like La Main Verte (translated as ‘Green Fingers’) from their ‘Mamagubida’ album. However, the ‘herb’ references have become less evident in their later albums.

Tryo has sold around a MILLION albums worldwide and celebrated their tenth anniversary in 2006 with a nationwide tour.

The band has released three studio albums, a double CD, live album and two live DVDs.

Christophe Mali released a solo album ‘Je vous emmène’ in April 2006. Guitarist/songwriter Guizmo is also in the band Pause.
